Three generations of Deventer painters (The Historical Museum Deventer)

Painting talent was abundant in Deventer in the 19th and 20th centuries, not least among the Korteling family. Ancestor Gerhard Korteling started a painting business on Smedenstraat in 1839. His son, Bartus Korteling, was an inspiring drawing teacher for decades, including at the Deventer Drawing Academy. His son, Willem Korteling, the third generation, was the first painter to earn a living from his free work. The Korteling family's story shows how craftsmanship evolved into art. With a book, exhibition, and dedicated website, 2011 will be a true Korteling year!

Willem (1889-1964) sketched prolifically and painted numerous landscapes, still lifes, flowers, and plenty of cows and chickens! Romanticism, Impressionism, and the revival of the Hague School—all styles are represented in the Korteling exhibition!

The richly illustrated book The Korteling family, art and crafts Roel H. Smit-Muller offers a wonderful overview of all the Kortelingen. The book is published by Uitgeversmaatschappij Walburgpers, colorfully illustrated, hardcover, ISBN 978.90.5730.707.2
