At a young age I got Van der Vlist, among others, learns from the masters Willem van der Nat and Willem de Zwart . He received his training as a painter, with the help of a royal subsidy, at the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague).

He has been in for a long time To lead lived. A number of Dutch landscapes, city and village views by him from the area around Leiden date from that time. Van der Vlist was an artist who loved to travel and had a preference for Italy. He travelled to Verona, Venice, Chioggia, Florence, Viareggio, Sienna and Barga. He also spent some time in Bruges and Karlsruhe.

In 1938 he was the winner of the 1st prize of the Willink van Collenfonds and in 1943 he won the gold medal of Arti et Amicitiae . [2]

Van der Vlist has been a member of the associations De Haagsche Kunstkring, Association Saint Lucas (Amsterdam) and Maatschappij Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam).
