Hendrika Cornelia (Rie) de Balbian Verster-Bolderhei j[1][2][3] (Amsterdam, 25 February 1890 – Weesp, 12 March 1990) was a Dutch painter.

Biography

Rie Bolderheij was born in Amsterdam as the fifth child of Dirk Bolderheij and Cornelia Maria Christina Dreuzing.[1] At the age of twenty, Bolderheij married historian and journalist Jan François Leopold de Balbian Verster, and was given a studio on the Prinsengracht as a wedding present. In order to further develop herself as a painter, she took lessons from painters such as Isaac Israëls and Willem Wenckebach. She also exhibited with the latter on several occasions.

One of the most striking exhibitions in which De Balbian Verster-Bolderheij participated was an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1915. She also submitted several of her paintings for the art competition of the Summer Olympics in 1928. She was also a member of the Amsterdam artists' associations Arti et Amicitiae and the Guild of Saint Luke.

She mainly focused on painting portraits and still lifes, including the actress Sara Heyblom. The trips that De Balbian-Verster-Bolderheij made later in her career to Japan, Hong Kong, Morocco, Russia and Jordan were also an important source of inspiration.

Balbian Verster-Bolderheij died in Weesp in 1990 at the age of one hundred. Nowadays, her paintings are sold for several thousand euros. For example, in December 2009, a painting was auctioned for almost three thousand euros at Christie's Amsterdam.
