Constant Artz was born in Paris in 1870 as the son of the then well-known painter David Artz. The Artz family moved back to The Hague in 1874. Father Artz, who had once been apprenticed to Jozef Israels, was not much influenced by his new surroundings during his Parisian period. He painted mainly Dutch country life with well-executed images of farmers and farm wives.
