Christoffel Bisschop (1828 - 1904) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and lithographer. He was also a collector of 16th and 17th century antiquities.

There is currently an exhibition taking place at the Fries Museum with many works by this artist.

The painting has been stripped of old yellowed varnish, lightly restored where necessary and re-varnished by the restorer who also accepts work for the Rijksmuseum. This was done in May 2023.

Bisschop's work is in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam , the Rijksmuseum , Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen , the Groninger Museum , the Art Museum The Hague , The Mesdag Collection in The Hague, the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, Amsterdam Museum and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. The Fries Museum Leeuwarden has the largest collection of Bisschop's work.
